makin projects in association with Guildford’s Yvonne Arnaud Theatre presents Roger Llewellyn in

SHERLOCK HOLMES…THE DEATH AND LIFE – directed by Gareth Armstrong

Arthur Conan Doyle tires of 'his' intolerably arrogant Sherlock Holmes, and invents arch villain Moriarty to eliminate him. This dangerous scheme, combined with Doyle's passion for raising the spirits of the dead, has bizarre, dramatic and very unexpected outcomes.

A light-hearted and intriguing investigation of the consequences, when fictional characters take on lives and ambitions of their own, quite against the wishes of the author.

‘This is a truly great production: a wonderfully written, beautifully directed play ..... a wonderful thing to behold.  At once funny, engaging, and dark; it is the nearest thing to the perfect short play that you will see.  And its crowning glory is Roger Llewellyn.’ - Brighton Argus

‘Llewellyn’s performance was luminous, intense and a masterclass in the art of holding an audience spellbound. This is  focused, insightful and intelligent theatre, performed with the right degree of passion and conviction and  carrying one heck of a punch.’ - South Wales Evening Post

Also available to tour is Roger’s highly acclaimed production

SHERLOCK HOLMES…THE LAST ACT!

The World's Greatest Fictional Detective confronts the most complex case of all - his own Psyche.

Fine wit, Broad Humour, High Drama and a touch of Pathos – all 'elementary' aspects of this original & entertaining solo play.

It is 1916.

Drawn from 2 year's Sussex retirement for the funeral of his friend, Dr. Watson, Holmes returns to Baker Street to resolve 'the last act' of his epic career.

The play explores the mind of the real man, - not the thinking machine - an unexpectedly passionate and secretive man, with a cutting sense of humour.

Stripping away the infamous clinical façade, Holmes reveals fears & weaknesses, and the devastating consequences of the  dramas of his formative years. The whole being 'deduced ' from the 'clues' in Conan Doyle's stories.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

‘An actor completely in charge of his material, his stage and his own artistry, the vocally impeccable Roger Llewellyn achieves an almost old-fashioned, and certainly rare, symmetry of excellence and entertainment’ – The Times, Dublin

‘Roger Llewellyn precisely embodies Sherlock, Conan Doyle would have approved’ -Time Out, London

‘Holmes as you’ve always imagined him - but with a cutting sense of humour’. - Sunday Express

‘Llewellyn is a top-notch British actor, this is the finest, most fully realised one-man show I’ve ever seen’. -  Montreal Gazette

‘Llewellyn gives a flawless rendition of Holmes' sharp, complicated observations, with great wit & little maliciousness. He will seem real for even the most fanatical Holmesian : a charming & convincing Holmes, one full of shimmering sidelights, with a conviction and a precision that is a delight to behold’. -

West New York Daily Press

Roger Llewellyn won the Shakespeare Prize at RADA ; has had a long career in classical theatre, television, the West End, and repeat seasons with the RSC, before 8 years world—wide touring with his hugely acclaimed solo show Sherlock Holmes…the last act!

Both plays have been written for him by David Stuart Davies, a renowned author, and a specialist in adaptations of the Conan Doyle canon.

The production, created and directed by Gareth Armstrong, with a thrilling, original score from RSC composer Simon Slater offers a memorable, moving and intensely theatrical experience, which won "5 star" reviews at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and was selected as one of ‘The Top Ten Fringe Plays’ of the year.

It has played over 500 performances, in 450+ venues around the world, and enjoys many venue re-visits.
