Miles Davis

MILES

MILES. is a powerful new play that traces the life and legacy of jazz icon Miles Davis.

This deep-dive into the soul of an artist explores his influence which transcends genres and generations. Written and Directed by Oliver Kaderbhai, blending live music, projection and puppetry to craft a dream-like journey into Miles Davis’s complex world of innovation, addiction, creativity and transformation.

The story centres around a pivotal moment in music history - the creation of the groundbreaking 1959 album Kind of Blue. Contemporary jazz musician ‘Jay’ visits Columbia Records’ 30th Street Studio in New York to listen to the master tapes from the Kind of Blue session to try and work out how Miles created a masterpiece. There, he is met by Miles who, in his own inimitable style, challenges Jay to confront himself as an artist whilst revisiting his own chequered history.

With live music from the UK’s leading Jazz Trumpet star, Jay Phelps, the setting evokes the smokey jazz clubs and fevered late-night recording sessions of mid-century New York, transporting audiences directly into the era that gave birth to cool.
