TANGLE present Woza Albert!

"the biggest box office drawcard in the history of The Market Theatre, Johannesburg"
Barney Simon

This brilliant two-man show first took Johannesburg and then the Edinburgh Festival and London by storm in 1982, playing to standing ovations every night.

WOZA ALBERT! is based on one dazzlingly simple idea: that the second coming of Jesus Christ would take place in the South Africa of the apartheid years.

As action moves from prison, to street, to train, to shop, each scene suggests a new scenario with new, vibrant characters asking ‘What would happen if Jesus Christ were to come to South Africa...now?’

Playing over 40 parts between them, donning red noses when they take the part of a white man, the storytelling is comic and tragic in turn, interspersed with songs, dance and mime.

WOZA ALBERT! is an evocative, suggestive play that boldly and humorously explores the individual’s relationship with apartheid and black oppression. By its end, actors and audience are united, sharing a common human experience of triumph over a difficult past.

WOZA ALBERT! is perhaps the most famous play to come out of South Africa.

The tour co-incides with the anniversary of 20 years of democracy in the Republic of South Africa.

WOZA ALBERT! runs at approximately 110 minutes with an interval.
